Linux progress…

ifconfig is the magic way to get some ipconfig-like info such as addresses, but you have to send messages to the DHCP client daemon to release/renew/etc… dhcpcd

And a program called Cygwin for the PC would allow it to accept an Xwindows forward.

I don’t yet know what the hell is wrong with my dual 600. The ram passed both RST and memtest86, FC4 installed fine again from a new DVD which passed mediacheck… and crashed as soon as it started up after install. Gotta check CPU fans, maybe update the BIOS and try a beefier power supply…

But the two to four minutes I used Fedora Core 4 I liked it! Grr…

Hey… have you looked at Ubuntu for a desktop Linux? I know it isn’t really what you’re looking at for now, but once you become comfortable with the hardcore (server) stuff, you might want to try something like Ubuntu for day-to-day stuff, especially if 90% of your computer time is web, email, and tinkering with little utils and toys. In that case, how much does the OS really matter?

    it totally matters.
for example, I hate OSX, even for surfing and email ;)

lol, actually, I still think it matters in how user friendly and easy to navigate the OS is. I thought about picking up a minimac just to get familiar with OSX and macs again, but I would rather spend time with Linux over osx. just more familiar and use to it how Linux works, and the quirks that exist in it.

That said, I just want a web browser that will block all popups natively, and has a built in system to prevent spyware and malicious downloads.

    that is all

Doesn’t Firefox give you all that?
